Wildebeests 10-5 Rathoath

By: Coolmine RFC

Coolmines “Wildebeests” were in action in Ashbrook last Friday night under floodlights. The Coolmine elders took on Rathoath in dry but freezing conditions. The match consisted of four 15 minute quarters and the home side won out two trys to one thanks to scores from two new backline recruits. The first score came after 10 minutes, sustained pressure from the pack in the Rathoath 22 gave Coolmine a solid platform for attack and quick hands in the back line gave full back Alan Hickey his first scoring opportunity which he duly took. It was an even enough game but the “Beests” dominated at the breakdown and managed to secure turnover ball on more than one occasion frustrating the visitors. Spectators had to wait another 20 minutes for the second score. Again quick ball from the base of the ruck gave Coolmine an overlap on the left wing and Joe Brennan made no mistake, touching down in the corner. Mick McDonagh’s difficult conversion clipped the near upright and failed to go over. Rathoath looked dead and buried at this stage but managed to intercept a long sweeping pass and ran the length of the pitch unchallenged to pull back 5 points. The visitors finished the strongest piling pressure on the Coolmine defence but the home side were determined to maintain their 100 per cent record against the Meath team and managed to hold out till the final whistle. A big game next Sunday for the Wildebeests as they take on a touring side from the USA. All support welcome!
