U21s squad embark on a tour to Huddersfield
Good Friday saw the U21s squad (and a few senior members) embark on a tour to Huddersfield. With an early start the lads were in full flight from the off. After getting to Huddersfield, they managed to go to a Huddersfield Giants rugby league game and then out for a few refreshments on the Friday afternoon and night to take in all of the cultural offerings of West Yorkshire!
Huddersfield YMCA we’re the club that we were playing on the Saturday morning. As a club they made us feel extremely welcome from the moment we got there, they couldn't do enough for us. The game was played in a fantastic spirit with both sides showing glimpses of free flowing rugby. I don't think anyone really knows what the final score was but suffice to say that it was one of the most entertaining match that coolmine have played for a long time! Baileys was the half time drink of choice that was 'forced' upon the lads by their larger than life Manager 'Spud' who was keen to educate our young guns in the way of rugby tours of old!
We retired to the bar for a few formalities and refreshments. The Huddersfield lads really incorporating the coolmine guys into their celebrations. Lions 1997 legend John Bentley even made an appearance and chatted with everyone at length (his son was playing).
A great trip had by all and with many still recovering a few days later. Huddersfield YMCA have promised to return the visit next year and hope to bring a few teams. I am sure that both clubs will get on like a house on fire. We look forward to their visit and to returning the hospitality which was extended to us in Huddersfield.
The U21s have one remaining match - the annual Miko Killarney cup between Coolmine and Monivea, to be held in Coolmine (date to be confirmed)
